ARCHIRUN 24/08 2024

Iconic buildings, but not the way you know them. We are announcing the second edition of our architectural race - ARCHIRUN 2024.

From rooftop to rooftop! This year, we will take a look at Prague from above. We will see how it's changing right before our eyes, with old buildings that have made their mark on our history, the reconstruction of those that are inseparable from the streets of our metropolis, and the new buildings that are changing its face. We will also explore places that are not commonly accessible. Plus, you'll meet other enthusiasts who like to run around the city with their eyes fixed on the buildings around them.

ARCHIRUN is for everyone - whether you already run 10k in an hour or your heart rate increases from a brisk walk up the stairs. The route is roughly eight kilometers long and can be completed by everyone. Run, jog, walk! Sign up and become part of a community of runners who love architecture.

CHECKPOINTS ON THE ROUTE

1 CAMP / IPR 1974

The run begins and ends at the building of the Association of Design Studios. Today it houses the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Prague) and the Center for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning (CAMP). The complex of three seemingly levitating cubes in the gardens of the Emmaus Abbey was originally intended to serve as the headquarters of several studios run by the most renowned Czech architects of the second half of the 20th century. Apart from the architect of the building, Karel Prager, this group included Věra and Vladimír Machoninovi (Kotva, DBK) and Karel Filsak (Intercontinental Hotel). During the Normalization period, the building became the headquarters of Projektový ústav Výstavby hl. m. Prahy. It still serves its purpose today: the city planning of Prague. Prager wanted to make the terraces accessible to the public and open a restaurant. By the way, there are also food elevators in the building to bring food to the roof terrace! This bold vision is part of the renovation that the building will undergo in the near future. Are you looking forward to it?

2 The Flow Building 2020

Want to experience a spectacular panoramic view of Prague? The first stop of the race is The Flow Building, built in 2020. It is designed in a modern architectural style, referring to the rich tradition and glory of Prague architecture. Its design is characterized by clean lines, with a glass and aluminum façade featuring Art Nouveau-inspired vertical elements. The facade uses Spissky Travertine, a material which is also used in the nearby Hotel Jalta. The building was designed by Chapman Taylor studio. From its terrace, you have the National Museum, Prague Castle and Vítkov in the palm of your hand.

3 Masaryčka 2023

Looking for the perfect place to watch the trains and the hustle and bustle of a changing city? You've just found it! Masarykovo nádraží and its surroundings will soon become an important transport hub with direct connections to the airport. The developer, Penta Real Estate, is working on the transformation of the area in cooperation with the Czech railway administration (Správa železnic). The flagship of the entire transformation is the Masaryčka complex of office buildings, designed by the world-famous studio Zaha Hadid Architects and developed by the Prague office of Jakub Cigler Architects. The main dominant feature is the golden western façade. The golden color represents the legend of "The golden city of one hundred spires". Train enthusiasts can see motifs of railway tracks on the façade. The building's characteristic anodised aluminium shell is topped with a green roof.

4 ARA Palace 1931

On the route, you will also find a department store inspired by American skyscrapers. The ARA Palace was exceptional for its time in several ways. Its structure is made of steel instead of the reinforced concrete commonly used at the time. The window surfaces with bent glass, which was a Czechoslovak patent, are also a distinctive feature. It is therefore still one of the icons of Czech functionalism. The house was built between 1928 and 1931 by the A. and R. Amschellberg company, which sold textile goods. The building was designed by Milan Babuška, the architect behind the National Technical Museum and the National Agricultural Museum in Letná, among other things. The building, later known as OD Perla, served its original purpose until the 1970s. The last reconstruction took place between 2018 and 2019. The tenants living on the seventh to ninth floors can relax on the terrace and enjoy the views of Hradčany and Na Příkopě Street.

5 Máj department store 1975

From brutalism to a giant theme park? The department store at the corner of Spálená and Národní, designed by Miroslav Masák, John Eisler and Martin Rajniš of the SIAL studio, was one of the most important works of Czech architecture of the 1970s. The architectural design of the building retained the functionalism of the interwar period and combined elements of brutalism and hi-tech architecture. It caught the eye of many foreign media and architecture critics. Between 2022 and 2024, Máj department store underwent a radical reconstruction under the supervision of the developer AMADEUS Real Estate. A controversial artwork by sculptor David Cerny—two several-meter-long moving sculptures of butterflies composed of the fuselages of Spitfire fighter jets —landed on the facade, and inside, you will now find restaurants, a bar with a view, a huge amusement park as well as eccentric interiors and shops.

  • Národní 63/26

**6 National Theatre 1883 ** A national classic at last. This time you will enjoy the view of the embankment, Smetanovo nábřeží, from the roof terrace. The last stop is the National Theatre, designed by Josef Zítek in the style of the late Northern Italian Renaissance. After a fire in 1881, the newly built theater became the only building in the world with an all-metal structure. The project was the work of the Prášil brothers, who later participated in the construction of the Petřín Tower. The dome of the National Theatre is covered with slate. 46,200 slate sheets were laid on the roof, held together with 92,400 screws. The roof is framed by a gilded cast-iron railing and more than two and a half kilograms of 24-carat gold were used to decorate it. The National Theatre building still shines after 140 years, just as it did in the days when it was called the Golden Chapel.

ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP II: Make your own telescope

Archirun is more about experience than speed, we discover new or renovated buildings, observe the city from above, and explore how it is changing. And that's why a special telescope comes in handy. Create your own and see Prague through a different lens. The workshop is suitable for children aged 4 and up with an accompanying adult. You can come at any point between the times listed.

RULES AND GENERAL PRINCIPLES

1/ The start and finish of the run is in front of CAMP at Vyšehradská 51. Details of the route will be sent to the runners and posted on the website www.praha.camp/archirun sometime during July. The route is 7—8 km long.

2/ We will run in waves of 15 runners, leaving every 5 minutes from 9.00 am. You can choose which wave you want to run with.

3/ A recommended route is provided as part of registration; however, no one will prevent you from choosing your own. To complete the run, you have to stop at at least 5 checkpoints. You will get a stamp at each of them.

4/ Try to stretch and sweat, but don't feel the need to break any records. We will run through the city during the standard weekend traffic and activity. That is one of the reasons we won't time your run. We will appreciate it, though, if you decide to share your run, for example, in Strava.

5/ Starting fee is 350 Kc.

6/ Starting fee includes:

  • a limited Archirun 2023 edition t-shirt
  • a starting number name on the starting number
  • a medal refreshments at the finish
  • a photo and a certificate free to download

7/ Participants can pick up their start packets the day before the race (the location will be specified in the regulations of each race) and on the day of the race in the start and finish area, in CAMP.

8/ Each competitor declares that they participate voluntarily and at their own risk (and are therefore responsible for all and any consequences arising therefrom) and are medically fit and in such physical condition that they can complete the race without difficulty.

9/ When completing the race, the participant is obliged to follow the instructions of the organizers and other persons who cooperate with the organizer in the course of the event and must behave in such a way as not to endanger their own or anyone else's health, life or property.

10/ The organizer of the race provides storage of belongings and a changing room. However, please leave your valuables at home, we are not responsible for private property left on the premises.

11/ Race is for adults and kids over 15 years. They have to pay the starting fee. Younger racers can enter the run accompanied by their parents (they run for free)
