Zdenka, a young anthropologist, moves with her husband and three sons to Svalbard in Norway to observe how life is changing in the polar regions. She has been awarded a prestigious two-year grant to conduct extensive scientific research on the impact of globalization on the inhabitants of the world's northernmost city, Longyearbyen. After falling in love with her new home, Zdenka discovers that far more than glaciers and permafrost are disappearing in the Arctic. Through conversations with residents, she begins to realize just how heterogeneous the small local community really is and gradually uncovers the tensions that lie beneath the surface. At the same time, Zdenka tries to figure out to what extent she can get involved in the local community, which she originally only intended to observe.
