Why do some cities grow while others stagnate? This lecture will show how urban economics explains the impact of transport investments, labor market support, and construction on the relationships between settlements and their inhabitants. It will focus on who actually benefits from these decisions and what economic mechanisms are behind them. It will include theoretical frameworks and empirical findings that help to understand the functioning of urban and regional processes, along with recommendations for creating more effective public policies. The program builds on previous years devoted to the role of regulation in urban development, but this time it offers a deeper insight into economic relationships.

The event takes place as part of the Urban Economics course organised by the Department of Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague. The department focuses on education and research in spatial mobility, settlement and landscape development at the local and regional levels, and the social and economic contexts of territorial development.
