What to do with empty and dilapidated buildings that bear the legacy of different eras and still contain the imprint of invested energy, work, and materials? At first glance, they are often lifeless, yet full of potential. How can we restore their function, value, and meaning without losing their cultural significance? This Rethink Architecture lecture focused on conversions and modifications of buildings of various character, use, and period of origin. It will show you how industrial halls become cultural spaces or housing, and how interwar and postwar architecture is being preserved abroad. The event also presented smaller structures, such as former boiler rooms, transformer stations, or heat exchangers on housing estates.
The event was organized by the Rethink Architecture Institute in cooperation with the Center for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning under the auspices of the Czech Green Building Council and the Czech Chamber of Architects. The event was part of lifelong learning for architects of the Czech Chamber of Architects and was valued at 0.5 points. The event was co-financed by the City of Prague and was part of the LIFE ClimArchiBase project, co-financed by the EU and the Ministry of the Environment.
