Construct or convert? There are different ways to respond to the housing shortage. In 2021 in Berlin, FAR frohn&rojas built a modern prefabricated building called Wohnregal, which aims to demonstrate the possibilities of fast, cheap, and modifiable construction in cities, and for which it received a nomination for the Mies van der Rohe Award. An example of the second approach is the recently completed renovation of former office spaces in an industrial part of Paris by DATA Architectes, who placed the control centre of the city's transportation company on the lower floors and designed a total of 58 affordable apartments with balconies and terraces for better views in the higher floors. Another example is a wooden pavilion-style building near Barcelona, containing 85 social housing units, from Peris+Toral Arquitectes studio. The quality of housing and ample space in the landscaped courtyard also earned the project a spot among the finalists for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022. The various designs will be presented by architects Marc Frohn from FAR frohn&rojas, Colin Reynier from DATA Architectes, and José Toral from Peris+Toral Arquitectes.
