At first glance, it may seem that most questions concerning our pre-revolutionary architectural culture have been already settled and closed. Upon closer inspection, however, obvious ambiguities arise not only in terms of the interpretation of historical phenomena, but especially in the question of how to approach the material heritage represented by surviving post-war buildings. This book, along with the now-concluded exhibition project, was therefore concerned not only with the past, but primarily aimed to positively influence that day social debate.
Members of the working group around Vladimir 518 collected materials and thousands of historical photographs documenting Czech pre-revolutionary architecture. These subsequently became the primary visual source for the book Architektura 58–89 (Architecture 58–89). The audiovisual installation for the Centre for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning worked with a selection from an equally extensive archive of contemporary photographic documentation, though it employed these materials in a much freer and more experimental way through the use of original electronic music and animation.
