From among 25 applications, the jury selected 8 teams to develop competition proposals. These proposals were then evaluated anonymously (the jury did not know who had submitted which proposal).

What is the motivation behind the renovation of Bratří Jandusů Square in Uhříněves? The motivation is that both residents—longtime locals and newcomers alike—and political representatives care deeply about this square, which currently does not quite resemble a square. The site where the Říčanka Creek intersects with Přátelství Road (formerly the Císařská Road) has a rich factual history, but personal histories also shape how it is perceived, as you will see in the competition brief. Abstract: One square—three distinct characters. The historic center of Uhříněves is naturally divided by the Říčanka Creek into three distinct sections; in this proposal, we develop these through conceptual, material, and landscape design solutions. Emphasis is placed on calming traffic, strengthening pedestrian connections, the composition of land use, the relationship between the historic and the new, and landscaping accompanied by blue-green infrastructure. The central public space in front of the school and church is expanded by rerouting Přátelství Street. The statue of St. Jan Nepomucký becomes the dominant feature at the focal point of the compositional views. Adjacent to the central space is a tranquil spot by the stream beneath the tree canopy, which is now integrated into the fabric of the square. The final element is a park-like children’s playground. Jury Evaluation: From the very beginning, we considered this proposal one of the favorites. What makes it exceptional—and sets it apart from all the others—is the clear and legible division of the site into three distinct units. This alone makes working with the site far easier. The proposal then establishes guidelines for defining the character of each of these spaces individually. Through measured planning, the result is a proposal for this location in the town that we consider unambiguous, convincing, flexible, and straightforward. The proposal calls for a moderate realignment of Přátelství Street so that the resulting solution expands the space in front of the school and beneath the church at the expense of the space in front of the Kormak building.

The dimensions of the parking capacity and Park & Ride facilities are fully in line with the city district’s vision. A benefit for pedestrians is the underpass beneath Přátelství Street along the Říčanský Stream. Another positive aspect is the placement of the prominent children’s play structure outside the southern part of the project area, which, at the residents’ request, is kept relatively quiet. Another aspect of the solution is the placement of two pedestrian crossings, which may not be approved. Objections from the Environmental Protection Department can be easily addressed in this proposal. The district’s request to reinstate mature trees into the design can be accommodated very well given the concept of the solution.

Most of the green spaces in the study area have been removed from the proposal.

The specific surface treatments are based on the specific functions of the individual sections. Paving is used in most cases. The amount of added greenery is not excessive, and the proposal handles water management very realistically. The blue-green infrastructure is addressed in a very practical manner (not merely for show). The site appears to be a square at first glance. Of all the proposals, this one most closely aligns with the municipal district’s requirement for what a classic square should look like in the general sense. The relocation of the statue of Jan Nepomuk to a dignified spot in front of the church is also appropriate. The expanded space in front of the school thus takes on additional significance beyond simply serving as a gathering place for children before or after school or as a venue for cultural events. Given the traffic volume, the issue of how this space relates to the busy road still needs to be resolved.
