The area around the Vinohrady Water Tower is set to come to life. A unique water education center will be established there, giving the public insight into everything that goes into something we take for granted—like the drinking water that flows from our taps. The City of Prague, Pražská vodohospodářská společnost (the Prague Water Management Company), Pražské vodovody a kanalizace (Prague Water and Sewerage), and Veolia have joined forces on this project.

As part of the project, the historic water tower and the waterworks building on Korunní street will be renovated. Construction began at the end of 2024. Completion is expected by the end of 2026, with Hydopolis itself set to open to the public in 2027.

In the operations building, the structural work has progressed—the reception area, the conference hall’s catering facilities, and the conference hall floor have been completed. At the water tower itself, after the soil was removed from the roof and the roof was thoroughly cleaned, roof insulation was installed, and work is underway to prepare the side concrete wall, which will be adorned with the “Hydropolis” inscription.

At the same time, work is being carried out inside the water tower, specifically the removal of weathered plaster in both chambers and the creation of an opening for the connecting pipe from the operations building. In the near future, plans call for plastering work in both the exhibition water tower and the operations building, preparation of utility networks in both structures, and, concurrently, work will begin on repairing the tower’s facade.

The currently closed complex will be transformed into a new public space featuring a wide range of play and water features, accessible to the general public. One of the underground water towers will house a unique exhibition showcasing contemporary water treatment and purification technologies. The project also includes lecture halls with supporting facilities seating over 220 people, as well as a new exhibition space for rotating exhibits in the historic water tower, which offers an extraordinary view of Prague. Metrostav DIZ was selected as the contractor through a competitive bidding process.
