The impetus for this comprehensive solution was the planned tramway renovation, which made it possible to treat the street as a single unit. This little-known but significant historical axis features a variety of distinct character types. First, it passes through the original village center of Kobylisy with its low-rise buildings and lively ground-floor retail, then through a bustling intersection with a metro station, and continues through a quiet neighborhood of single-family homes with gardens. All functions and modes of transportation must be integrated into a relatively narrow street space.

Another key aspect of the conceptual study was the coordination of individual utility providers and investors. We succeeded in convincing the operators of the various utility networks to participate in the overall street reconstruction, thereby avoiding the unpopular and costly repeated excavation of the street. Street lighting and overhead power lines are mounted on shared poles, saving space on the sidewalks. Another focus was finding an economical yet aesthetically appropriate solution for road surfaces outside the exposed and historically protected part of Prague.

In addition to modifications intended to ensure better conditions for everyday traffic, a recreational area with trees, street furniture, and a playground was proposed in the residential neighborhood in place of the existing large intersection with Veltěžská Street. In the northern part of the street, a single-sided tree-lined avenue has been added to cool the heated roadway.

Klapkova is the first conceptual study for which project documentation has been prepared and approved. As part of the pioneering effort to implement a study of high-quality urban space, there were several conflicts with standard practice dictated by technical requirements, standards, and building codes. The resulting project is therefore a compromise. The lessons learned from this phase are particularly useful for preparing other concept-oriented public space projects.

Klapkova Street is a significant historic thoroughfare that cuts through the local center of Kobylisy. The reconstruction of the tram line creates an opportunity for broader consideration of the overall character of this public space.
