The Ian Bryan Architects (IBA) studio has won the invited architectural competition for the revitalization of the central part of Dolní Měcholupy in Prague. The project focuses on creating a new square along Kutnohorská Street, which is intended to serve as a springboard for the neighborhood’s future development, with new construction planned for its eastern tip.

The goal of transforming the original narrow village green is to create a new square with community amenities and commercial services, such as a health clinic, a post office, small shops, or even a small supermarket along the square’s perimeter. Widening the street in this central area into an open space highlights the existing historic school building and the adjacent park.

The design of the new buildings in the B1 mixed-use complex is inspired by traditional Czech farmhouses and barns, which often lined the main village road and formed a natural village green. The ground level around the square will feature a covered colonnade, evoking the classic arcades that pulsate with small-town life, while the residential floors above will feature inviting balconies and terraces, creating a soft barrier between public and private spaces. This proven concept creates a rich and interesting space in which the square is intended to become a venue for a variety of activities for both locals and visitors.
