The footbridge that opened this year has connected two city districts and, from a city-wide perspective, will improve the logical organization of the cycling paths on the Žižkov-Karlín-Holešovice-Troja axis. The new footbridge is also of great importance for the accessibility of Štvanice Island as an important recreational site. Vehicle access to Štvanice is secured via the Hlávkův Most bridge. Access for pedestrians, however, is inconvenient, with a long walking distance for residents of Karlín and Holešovice. The idea of a footbridge over Štvanice has long been a feature of the Prague Zoning Plan.

A competition was announced with the intention of finding the most suitable design for the new footbridge, on the basis of which project documentation will be drawn up and the footbridge constructed. A brief was prepared in cooperation with the institutions concerned and experts, and the competition teams developed their proposals based on it. 48 teams, 16 of which were foreign, participated in the competition. The expert jury selected the two best designs and awarded them the first and third prizes.

The solution should support the important citywide connection between the city districts and at the same time make Štvanice Island more accessible. The new footbridge should provide comfortable and easy access. The most important limits for the design were the requirements for flood protection, from the river and waterway management, the characteristic urban situation on both banks, and the requirements for barrier-free access to the footbridge. The location of the footbridge builds on the Zoning Plan - on the Holešovice side, access was required from Bubenské nábřeží in front of the gate to Prague Market, while on the Karlín side from Rohanské nábřeží with an exit to the cycle path leading along the flood barrier and then to the planned public space of the Rohan Island development area. Access to the footbridge was also required from Štvanice. The footbridge will span the river with a width of 38 m between Karlín and Štvanice and 149 m between Štvanice and Holešovice.
