The renovation involves a historically protected complex—the headquarters of the Military History Institute (VHÚ)—which consists of three main buildings with an inner courtyard and surrounding small-scale areas nestled at the foot of Vítkov Hill in Žižkov. For the building’s users, it was essential to maximize the exhibition space and enhance comfort for visitors.

Through construction modifications—including the separate renovation of existing structures, the roofing of the atrium, the construction of an underground level connecting all buildings, and the construction of an underground mechanical room for the HVAC system—the total usable area was increased to more than 11,000 m². Of this, approximately one-third is dedicated exclusively to exhibitions, which have doubled in size compared to their previous area.

At first glance from the outside, there are no significant changes to the building’s massing; all newly created underground spaces will be invisible once the renovation is completed, revealed only by the newly located museum entrance, which is accessible from the side of the main historic staircase. A more striking feature is the enclosure of the interior atrium with a lightweight perimeter shell and a steel-framed glass roof. The building contains a large number of artistic and artisanal elements and original materials, which are currently being restored.

From a functional standpoint, the building retains its status as the headquarters of the Military History Institute (VHÚ) and includes the necessary offices. In addition to the exhibition spaces, the building now includes classrooms, restoration workshops, a café, and expanded visitor facilities. The exhibition spaces are divided into six halls with permanent exhibits, two halls for temporary exhibits, and one hall featuring an interactive exhibit. The exhibitions cover the history of the Czech lands from their origins to the present day, while the interactive section depicts life in the trenches during World War I. visualization and display elements were designed for the exhibition spaces to allow the museum to showcase the vast number of artifacts housed in its storage facilities.
