Stéphane Demoustier / France / 2025 / 105 min. / language French, Danish / Czech subtitles
One of the few feature films dedicated to architects and architecture inspired by real events, it follows the story of Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, an architecture teacher from Copenhagen. In 1982, he surprised both the professional and political public when he won a public competition announced by French President François Mitterrand. The building, nicknamed “the cube”, became part of the megalomaniacal Grands Projets—eight monuments commemorating the 200th anniversary of the French Republic. However, the Danish architect’s idealistic approach soon clashes not only with local architect Paul Andreu, but also with political intrigues. The precise film adaptation was based on the book of the same name by Laurence Cossé and is a refreshing contribution to architectural cinema.
