Life on a wartime timetable
Jiří Menzel / Czechoslovakia / 1966 / 92 min / Czech / English subtitles

Jiří Menzel’s iconic work based on Bohumil Hrabal’s novel of the same name will open this year’s outdoor film season. The story, set during World War II, shows that human nature does not change in difficult times, but comes to the surface even more strongly in contrast to war. The main character is a young railway trainee, Miloš Hrma, who experiences not only his first love, but also his journey to adulthood at a rural railway station. This year, the entire summer cinema programme will be in the spirit of railways – trains, railway stations and tracks will be the common motif for all the films screened.
