We sometimes tend to look down on the architecture of the 1990s. We used to take a similar stance toward buildings from the 1960s–1980s—but today we are rediscovering them and learning to understand them. Now it is the turn of buildings that were constructed shortly after the fall of communism. The 1990s were a period of great change and freedom, which was also reflected in architecture. On the one hand, there was a sense of “austerity” after the revolution—inspired by interwar modernism and functionalism; on the other, “disco”—the freely playful postmodernism of the admired West. This lecture and subsequent guided tour of the DEVADE exhibition will introduce you to interesting buildings constructed in Prague between 1989–2004. Together with architect Jan Bureš, co-author of the book of the same name, we will explore how architecture responded to the social changes of that era.
