Rule of Stone

Danae Elon / Canada, Israel / 2024 / 84 min. / English, Hebrew, and Arabic / English subtitles

When Israel conquered East Jerusalem, including the Old City, in 1967, it immediately declared it the unified capital of the state. To eliminate visible borders, the so-called "stone rule" was introduced—a regulation requiring every building to be clad in typical Jerusalem stone, imitating the original Palestinian architecture. What appeared to be an effort to preserve historical unity became a tool of power and the reshaping of the city's identity. The documentary reveals the aesthetic, ideological, and strategic power of architecture, which has shaped modern Jerusalem for half a century, while raising questions about the moral responsibility of architects.
