How can a large exhibition complex be sustainably transformed to be suitable for new uses? When does it make sense to build only temporarily? And how is architecture created that stands up on a European scale? As part of the Urban Talks series, representatives of the winners of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture—EUmies Awards—will join us to present their projects as newly honored architects. The transformation of the Charleroi Palais des Expositions in Belgium by the studios AgwA and architecten jan de vylder inge vinck, recipients of the Architecture Winner award, demonstrates how an existing building, its capacity, and new layers can be reimagined by removing superfluous elements. The Emerging Winner project, Temporary Spaces for the Slovenian National Theatre Drama in Ljubljana by Vidic Grohar Arhitekti, explores the theme of temporary architecture, which is not merely a stopgap but a fully-fledged facility for the cultural institution during the renovation of its historic building.
