Lukáš Smetana & Jan Kunze

Factories of culture. Setting the mill wheels in motion. Powering up the power plant. This time, Ondřej Cihlář welcomed architect Lukáš Smetana to his camping “chair”; Smetana and his wife purchased the Gočár Mills and gradually transformed them into a cultural center in Pardubice called Automatické mlýny (Automatic Mills). Joining him was Jan Kunze—a poet, musician, dramaturge, curator, and, most recently, director of the EPO1 Gallery in Trutnov, often compared to London’s Tate Modern, which was also built in a former power plant. How are these two industrial buildings, which have found new life after many years, changing the way locals spend their free time? How did their reconstruction proceed? And what other plans do the people behind them have for the future?
