Before the project was officially commissioned to the architects, the public had the opportunity to get involved through the “Together in Letná” survey, in which over 800 respondents participated. With representatives from City Hall and the architects in attendance, a participatory session was then held with students from Korunovační Elementary School, followed by a meeting with residents at the Water Tower, where the study’s concept was presented for feedback. Thus, in addition to experts from the Prague 7 Municipal District, the Institute for the Protection of Historical Monuments, the Prague Institute for Planning and Developement (IPR), architects, transportation specialists, and dendrologists, the general public—especially local residents—also contributed to the final form of the study.
The current Korunovační Street is generously proportioned and has significant potential to be transformed into a prestigious urban residential boulevard. In the proposed study, the studio edit! architects coordinate the planned infrastructure renewal projects and, in light of the presence of school facilities, propose a new street layout with an emphasis on improving traffic safety for all road users. The architects also focus on creating the conditions for the restoration and expansion of the street tree line and emphasize the overall aesthetics of the public space.
The study envisions a 10-meter-wide space on both sides of the street, functionally divided into three zones: tree-lined avenues, sidewalks, and front yards, which will thus be brought closer to the houses and, at least partially, restore the street’s original character.
The proposal retains the current number of traffic lanes in both directions. New crosswalks are proposed, the number of parking spaces—including short-term parking for deliveries—is increased, and a number of safety features are added.
The study strongly incorporates the principles of blue-green infrastructure, which aims to improve public space through significant revitalization and the planting of new greenery. The plans include the possibility of public participation in the design of the front yards. These will feature a mix of perennial beds, shrubs, ornamental grasses, and solitary multi-stemmed shrubs.
The health of the trees in the main tree-lined avenue will be improved by increasing the volume of rootable space along the entire length of the street, replacing the substrate, and expanding the area of the tree beds. Water supply to the trees will also be ensured by cross-sloping the sidewalks and by utilizing water from the roadway surface outside the winter season. There are also plans to plant new trees outside the main tree-lined avenue. Planting these trees will enhance the public space, particularly at the corners of intersections with Korunovační Street.
