Urbanism at Anděl

In the early 1990s, Smíchov was still one of the bleak industrial parts of the city, facing the real threat of widespread redevelopment. How did architects manage to push through a concept that built on the historical structure of this neighborhood? And why is this 1990s project considered timeless despite the problems the area faces today? This guided walk will focus on the urban design of Anděl, the street network, the multifunctional use of blocks, and the fact that the neighborhood still functions as a vibrant urban whole. The tour will be led by architect and co-author of the book DEVADE Jan Bureš and Rostislav Zapletal from the IPR Prague Office of Public Space. Together, they will look back at how Anděl was created in the 1990s, how it has withstood the daily traffic of the city, what demands are placed on it today, and what changes it is currently undergoing.
