Urbanism at Anděl

In the early 1990s, Smíchov was one of the city’s neglected industrial districts. There was even a threat that a large part of the area would be demolished. Thanks to the initiative of architects, however, a different approach was successfully implemented. This approach built upon the neighborhood’s original historical structure rather than completely erasing it. The project from the 1990s is still considered timeless today, even though the area faces various challenges. During this guided walk, we’ll focus on the Anděl area. We’ll examine the street layout, how the individual blocks function, and how the neighborhood is faring as a whole. Together with our guide Lenka Hubáčková, we will explore how Anděl came into being in the 1990s, how it has fared in the city’s daily life, what demands we place on it today, and what changes it is currently undergoing.
