In the early 1990s, Smíchov was still one of the city’s bleak industrial districts, facing the very real threat of wholesale demolition. How did architects manage, through their initiative, to push through a concept that built on the neighborhood’s historical structure? And why is this 1990s project considered timeless despite the problems the area faces today? This guided walk will focus on Anděl’s urban design, the street grid, the multifunctional use of blocks, and the fact that the neighborhood still functions as a vibrant urban entity today. Together with guide Lenka Hubáčková, we’ll look back at how Anděl came into being in the 1990s, how it has fared in the city’s daily life, what demands are placed on it today, and what transformation it is currently undergoing.
The event is organized in cooperation with the Elpida Educational and Cultural Center.
