Prager's Cubes

How is the perception of post-war architecture changing and how can we preserve its qualities for the 21st century? Come and see what awaits the former Association of Design Studios complex in the Emmaus monastery grounds. Architect Benedikt Markel will guide you through the history and future of the complex completed in 1975 according to the design by Karel Prager and Jiří Kadeřábek. Between 2027 and 2030, the three buildings will undergo sensitive renovation according to a project by IXA studio. Their immediate surroundings and greenery will be newly designed by landscape architects Land05.

You will learn about the bold steel structure and prefabricated elements from the GAMA system. The most distinctive feature is the light perimeter cladding on the facades. This creates a striking contrast with the heavy bases clad in ceramic and stone elements – a contrast that defines the character of the entire complex. We will also discuss details of the original interior and their reinterpretation for the present day, as well as how to build on the unfinished visions of the original authors, for example, by opening up the roof terraces. The renovation of the complex will show how this significant complex can be "refreshed" for the 21st century and transformed into a modern institution open to the public.

The event is part of the Day of Architecture festival.
