The current urban layout of Dejvice was established in the 1920s on the basis of Professor Antonín Engel’s masterplan. The plan follows a symmetrical composition centered around Victory Square. However, the north-western quadrant of Victory Square remains undeveloped, leaving the square composition incomplete and disrupting the overall urban structure of the area.
The Fourth Quadrant company, formed by investors Penta Real Estate, Sekyra Group and Kaprain, together with the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague intends to develop this empty site in the original Dejvice structure. In order to find the architectural solution for completing the 4th quadrant, an international architectural competition was organized. The competition took the form of a competition workshop and was prepared in collaboration with the City of Prague and the Prague 6 Municipality.
The competition, whose results were presented in this exhibition, sought the optimal architectural and urban design solution for the 4th quadrant of Victory Square. The proposals were to respect Antonín Engel’s 1924 masterplan for Dejvice while aligning with Prague's plans for the revitalization of Victory Square and the regeneration of public spaces of the Dejvice Campus. At the same time, proposals took into account the contemporary requirements for a multifunctional development that meets the highest environmental standards, aiming to create a place for vibrant social, economic and cultural life in Prague 6. The competition participants were tasked with designing a multifunctional building that incorporates apartments, offices, shops, services and restaurants, as well as a new university building of the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague. In addition to classrooms and facilities for students, the building should also house public spaces and even a microbrewery. The brief also included the design of a new cultural center for Prague 6. This center will provide spaces for concerts, exhibitions and theater performances, and community events.
The competition was announced in August 2022, sparking the interest of 44 teams. In September 2022, the jury, after reviewing the submitted portfolios, selected 10 participants for the first round. Five teams were shortlisted for the second round in February 2023. Finally, in June of 2023, the jury selected the winning proposal, a joint design by the Dutch office Benthem Crouwel Architects and the Czech studio OVA.
