They used to be called “rabbit hutches” or “dormitories”, but today they are home to a third of the Czech Republic’s population. How have prefabricated housing estates changed since their inception? And what is it like to live in them today? We will take the metro to Jižní Město, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and is the largest housing estate in the country. The destination of our trip will be the revitalized space of the first Czech multiplex cinema from 1996, which was transformed into the Galaxie cultural station last year. It is there that the stories of the housing estate are now coming to life in the illustrated exhibition City of Dreams. Thanks to it, we will find out what is happening behind the windows of prefabricated buildings and how people live in them. On the way back, we will also see the tallest prefabricated building in Czechia, whose two towers are connected high above ground by a covered footbridge. Can you count the number of floors that make up this symbol of the “Jižák”?
